Personality
Shikamaru is very lazy. Though he won't go out of his way to find excuses not to do things, he prefers to take life by a slow pace and will respond to problems with 'what a drag' or 'how troublesome'.
Despite this, he's a very loyal person. He'll do anything to help his friends and family and is always sure to protect them.
Hobbies/Interests
Due to Shikamaru's lazy personality, he prefers more relaxed activities. His preferred activity is sitting and watching the clouds. He's done this since he was a boy. He also enjoys taking naps.
But when he's not resting, he enjoys playing the game shogi against formidable opponents. However, he's rather difficult to win against due to his great intelligence and knack for strategy.
Brief History
Shikamaru has been through quite a lot throughout his life. Though his initial plan was to life a relaxing life, the Nara ended up becoming a chunin rather quick because he was acknowledged for his intelligence. Despite giving up during the exam, be still made it through.
Almost directly after, he lead a mission with his friends as his team to save Sasuke. Each friend came close to death, but they still managed to return from the failed mission alive. This left a bad taste in Shikamaru's mouth.
Later on, he was up against the Akatsuki along side his sensei Asuma Sarutobi. A member of the Akatsuki known as Hidan ended up murdering his sensei. Shikamaru and his teammates, Ino and Choji, said their last goodbyes. Shikamaru didn't attend his funeral and hadn't cried until his father forced it out.
After his got his emotions out, he planned out a strategy to kill Hidan along with his teammates. After luring him away and fighting one on one with him, he managed to bury him alive (though the man was in pieces).
Soon enough, the 4th Great Ninja war began. Shikamaru was second hand to Gaara in the fourth division, while his father was in the intelligence HQ. He would stop the un-killable enemies with his jutsu, and provide strategy when needed. When his father died due to the 10 tails beast bomb, he continued on despite how pained he was. He gave as much assistance as he could towards the war.
After the war, he became a representative for his village. For the most part, he remained home unless needed. Such as when he fought against a man named Gengo. He led a team of two, Sho and Ro, to stop him. After being caught in his genjutsu, Shikamaru was locked in darkness for ten days. The genjutsu caused him to lose sanity, and he almost joined his side. That is until Temari came to save him. Shikamaru stopped the man from his tyranny and returned home.
As an adult, Shikamaru is married to Temari and has a son named Shikadai. The three live in the Village Hidden in the Leaves. He is the leader of the Nara clan, and is the advisor to the 7th Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki.
Skills
Shadow Possession - This allows him to stop his targets in his track. They will then mimic his movements once his hands are moved from their initial position.
Shadow Sewing - He wraps his shadows around the target, restraining them with in. He may also use these to pierce his enemies or pick up objects.
Shadow Strangling - A shadow in the shape of a hand wraps around his enemy and can strangle them. The amount of energy he puts into it is the amount of strength around his targets neck.
Strategy - His intelligence is high. His ability to make strategies quickly is highly admired. He can think his way out of a lot of situations.
Mental Health
He has some doubts about himself. He labels himself as a coward simply because of his past. Though he has faith in his intelligence, he's always frightened he won't succeed or need to run away. After losing Asuma and his father, this fear hasn't left him.
Friendships

Tamari (@LeFanNinja) - His partner. The two have gone on dates together and have a tendency to tease each other. She comforts him on his rough days, but reprimands him on his lazy ones.
Shikadai Nara (*relevant to various, though most commonly @ShikadaiWAD) - His son. This is the child he has passed down his attitude to, and he hopes to continue to teach him.
Hidan (@Jashinism_) - Not a friend, but he's something like an arch nemesis. The two often get into arguments and fights. This likely won't stop until one of them ends up dead.
Deidara (@ClayCloned) - Similar to Hidan, but not nearly to the same extent. There are often arguments between the two, but physical violence has yet to ensue.
